The Youngest F1 World Champions in History

Sebastian Vettel became the youngest Formula 1 World Champion by winning the 2010 title aged 23.37 years.

Winning a single race young is one thing — carrying a title fight across a whole season at that age is somthing else entirely. A championship rewards consistancy over raw speed: you need to score in the races were the car is bad, manage tyres you don't trust, and hold your nerve while an older rival piles on the pressure. The drivers on this list did all of that before most people finish their first proper job.

Ages here are measured on the date of the final round of each driver's first title-winning season. Drivers who wrapped the championship up early — like Alonso in 2005 — were actualy slightly younger on the day they clinched it, so the canonical record books can differ by a few weeks. Each driver appears once, ranked by their first title.

The trend line is clearly pointing down. Fangio won his first title at 40; half a century later Vettel had won his at 23. Junior programmes now put drivers in F1 machinery at 17, and the teams that run title-worthy cars are increasingly willing to gamble on youth — wich means this list will probably keep getting rewriten.
